Kidpreneur Day meets city red tape, and a big snowstorm forecast

Our Kidpreneur Day kids got a lesson in city red tape
LNP's Chad Umble wrote up the paperwork side of Lancaster Kidpreneur Day, our kids' business fair in Binns Park on Oct. 10. Two of the 36 stands sold food or drinks, a lemonade-and-candy stand and a Pokémon latte stand, and because they were on city property, each needed a city health permit: a three-page application (one question asks how you'll heat your handwashing water to 100 degrees), a ServSafe certificate and a $140 fee.
The city's health chief, Craig Walt, waived both fees once the families said the money would go to the kids' extracurriculars, inspected both stands that morning and wrote "Great job!" on each report. The latte stand made $197. Will the city check the money didn't go to ice cream? Walt says no.

Find your snow shovel now, while it's 72 degrees
If you're not ready for winter, start getting ready. Kyle Elliott of Millersville University's Weather Information Center expects 20 to 30 inches of snow in parts of the county from December through February, with a chance of at least one double-digit "blockbuster snowstorm" between Jan. 20 and Feb. 20. Last winter ended with just over 21 inches in Millersville.
December should run 4 to 7 degrees warmer than average with plenty of plain rain through mid-January, then the big storms get their chance late January into late February. The wild card is a "Super El Niño," one of the strongest on record, and a strong El Niño fueled the January 2016 storm that dropped more than 26 inches on the county at once. Go find the snow shovel this weekend.
