Saturday storms knock out power to more than 34,000 houses

Storms tore through Lancaster County Saturday evening, snapping trees and cutting power to more than 34,000 PPL customers at the peak. By Sunday afternoon around 27,000 were still dark — roughly 10% of PPL's county base. Manheim Township, Lancaster city, East Lampeter Township, and Upper Leacock Township took the worst of it. PPL waived the 24-hour rule on its Ice and Water Program, meaning affected customers can get a bill credit for up to three gallons of water and three 10-pound bags of ice per day of the outage.

LNP's own printing facility lost power too. Sunday's paper couldn't finish its press run, and only a partial edition went out to home subscribers Monday morning. Long's Park closed Sunday and the Summer Music Series concert got postponed. Not the Fourth of July weekend anyone had on the calendar.
