Lombardo scraps his casual-dining plans near the airport

Sam Lombardo has walked away from his plans for a casual-dining restaurant near Lancaster Airport. Last month a partnership managed by Joseph Deerin Jr. (Deerin Companies) bought the vacant former Hoss's Restaurant at 100 W. Airport Road in Manheim Township for $2 million. This is the same site Deerin sold to Lombardo two years ago for $2.4 million and previously tried to develop as a Chick-fil-A. Township approvals were in hand for a 9,375-square-foot concept called Lombardo's Express with multiple food vendors, but the company says it isn't looking at other locations right now.

Lombardo took a $400,000 loss on the sale, but he holds the mortgage on the property, so he still stands to make more than $2 million over time. The building is now listed for lease with medical offices, traditional offices, or retail as the target uses. Meanwhile, the family's Lancaster city flagship (opened by his uncles in 1946) just wrapped an $8 million expansion including a new deli and outdoor seating.

Two Lancaster County cyclists riding 500+ miles for cancer research

Jeff Worley of Willow Street and John Riddell of Quarryville are hitting the road July 25 for the Empire State Ride, a 500+ mile trek from Staten Island to Niagara Falls to raise money for Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo. Riders average 60 to 100 miles a day. Worley's inspiration: a breast-cancer-awareness sticker on the side of a train car in North Carolina in 2019 that reminded him of a coworker fighting the disease. He snapped a picture then. This year he's putting the thoughts into a bike.

The pair have already blown past their goals. Worley raised $4,313against a $3,500 target. Riddell raised $11,524 against $10,000. Every dollar the ride raises gets matched $23-to-1 by external funding, mostly going to genetic testing and clinical trials. Donations stay open through the end of August.
