Wawa and Sheetz are about to be neighbors in Brownstown

The Brownstown-Rothsville exit of Route 222 is officially disputed territory in the Wawa-Sheetz rivalry. Wawa just got approval to build at 500 Burkholder Drive in West Earl Township, next to 222 Dutch Lanes. At 6,557 square feet it would be Wawa's largest store in the county, complete with a drive-thru pickup window for online orders. The kicker: it's less than half a mile from the Sheetz at 4179 Oregon Pike, which Sheetz plans to tear down and rebuild about 20% bigger. Sheetz still dominates the county 19 stores to 5, but Wawa has proposed six more here in recent years. And this isn't even their first standoff: last year Sheetz opened 200 yards from a Wawa on Lincoln Highway in East Lampeter. Pick your side and gas up accordingly.

Washington Boro turned out for its favorite tomato

There are few better places to be a Jet Star tomato than Washington Boro, and Saturday the town proved it. Crowds packed Washington Boro Community Park for the second and final weekend of the Washington Boro Tomato Festival, celebrating the sweet Jet Star that thrives in the river-bottom soil along the Susquehanna. The catch with a Jet Star is that it doesn't travel far or keep long, which is exactly why you have to go to it. The festival delivered tomato sandwiches, roasted corn, live music, and games, with proceeds benefiting Blue Rock Fire Rescue, the volunteer fire company covering Manor Township and Millersville Borough. A party for a tomato that pays the fire company's bills? That's about as Lancaster County as it gets.
