The Lancaster Card is here
It's live. The Lancaster Card is a $10 digital card that unlocks deals at six Lancaster County businesses, and it went on sale this morning. It lives on your phone, there's nothing to print, and there's no subscription. You pay ten dollars once and it's yours.
Here's what's on it. Speckled Hen Coffee gives you a free regular coffee, hot or iced, with any order, one per order, unlimited use. Slate Cafe takes $3 off any drink when you spend $10 or more on food. Ebersole's Vac Shop is 15% off anything in the store, up to twice a month. Savoy Truffle hands over a free tot or fry with any cheesesteak, once a day through Oct. 31. Lancaster Pickle Company gives you a free emotional support pickle with any $30 purchase, once a day. And Go 'N Bananas Family Fun Center upgrades a Deluxe Pass to an Ultimate Pass for free, one time, with a few restrictions spelled out on the card.
The Speckled Hen offer has no cap, so a few coffee runs and you're square. And when a new business signs on, that offer lands on the card you already bought, automatically. You never have to buy it twice. Thanks for support The Ledger!
The best meteor shower of the year peaks Wednesday night
The Perseids peak overnight Wednesday, Aug. 12, into Thursday, and this year the timing is close to perfect. The peak lands on a new moon, which means no moonlight washing out the faint stuff. "The Perseids are really the big event this month," said Cole Penkunas, resident astronomer at the North Museum of Nature and Science. "This is what most people are going to want to see."
You don't have to stay up until 4 a.m. to make it worth it, either. Penkunas says you can expect 20 to 30 meteors an hour between 9 and 11 p.m., and around 60 an hour at the peak under good conditions. If you're in the city, drive out toward darker ground. If you're in the county, your own backyard will do.
The North Museum is running a free public viewing from 8:30-10:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Millport Conservancy in Lititz, and registration is required (last year's filled up). There's also a solar eclipse Wednesday, but only about 5% of the sun gets covered here. Penkunas' assessment: "It's not going to be too exciting here."
