68 years of marriage, and gas line work starts today

The Digest

Sixty-eight years in, the fair is still a date

Jeannette and David Thomas, 87 and 89, took the Masonic Village shuttle to the Elizabethtown Fair on Wednesday night and did what they always do there. A root beer float, a hot dog, a walk through the fairgrounds, some people-watching, some live music, and holding hands the whole way. They have lived at Masonic Village for 20 years. Before that it was Mount Gretna. She retired from teaching in the Annville-Cleona School District, he retired as a carpenter at Milton Hershey School, and between them there are three sons and two grandchildren.

David said he had never seen the fair that busy, which suited them fine. He likes talking to the kids, she likes talking to everyone. Asked what has held 68 years together, Jeannette kept it short. "Patience and love," she said. "That's all you need."

Gas line work starts today on Hershey Avenue

UGI begins replacing natural gas lines in Lancaster city and Lancaster Township today, and the work runs through the end of September. The project covers Hershey Avenue from Manor Street to Union Street, the Fremont Street and Hershey Avenue intersection, the Manor Street and Hershey Avenue intersection, and Saint Joseph Street between Hershey Avenue and Prospect Street. Expect traffic and parking disruption. Most work happens Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 5 PM, but the Manor and Hershey intersection gets overnight crews from 8 PM to 6 AM.

Two things worth knowing if you live there. Work at Fremont and Hershey holds off until about 8:30 AM so kids can get into Lafayette Elementary, and it pauses again for afternoon dismissal. Some homes will lose gas service temporarily, and UGI needs inside access to inspect and relight equipment.
