Lancaster Airport retires a 91-year-old light, and Cain's Lanes becomes a coffee drive-thru

The Digest

Lancaster Airport retired the light that guided pilots home since 1935

Since the day Lancaster Airport opened in 1935, a rotating beacon has flashed green and white from 70 feet up, on a tower attached to the original airport building. The alternating colors mark a civilian airport, and pilots can pick it out from miles away. It dates to the era when flying meant a map, a compass, and dead reckoning. As part of an airport-wide switch to LED navigation lights, the airport recently took the original down and put a new LED beacon in its place.

The old one, a 3-foot Crouse-Hinds with faded orange paint, is sitting in a hangar for now. The airport authority wants to display it in the passenger terminal once planned upgrades to the building are finished. Ninety-one years of night shifts earns you a spot in the lobby.

Cain's Lanes is coming down for a coffee drive-thru and a car wash

The former Cain's Lanes bowling alley at 670 Lancaster Road, on Route 72 just outside Manheim, is getting demolished. Penn Township supervisors gave conditional approval on Aug. 24 to a plan that replaces the alley and its apartments with a drive-thru coffee shop and a two-bay car wash. Steven Gergely of Harbor Engineering presented it on behalf of Judy Grillo. The entrance goes on Route 72 with no turn lanes or traffic light, far enough from West Sun Hill Road that no traffic backup is expected. There's no indoor seating, so parking is minimal.

"They're starting to become more popular," Gergely told the board about drive-thru coffee shops. "You just roll up, order coffee and maybe a small pastry or something like that, and then move on." Which coffee shop? The article doesn't say. (We have guesses.)

Something good is finally coming in the mail

Your mailbox has been nothing but bills, a pizza coupon, and somebody else's Valpak for about ten years. The first Lancaster Ledger Quarterly is about to fix that. Four times a year I stuff an envelope with Lancaster and mail it to you: a long story about one local business I think you'll love (the kind I can't fit in a Wednesday email), a piece of Lancaster history you've probably driven past a hundred times, a recipe card from a real Lancaster County kitchen, and stickers that are going straight on your water bottle. All of it printed and packed here in Lancaster.

One issue is $29 with no commitment, or $99 gets you the full year. The first 100 are hand-numbered Founding Issues, and once they're gone, they're gone. If you want your name on one of those, now is the time.
