A $184 million night for Hempfield, and the woman who built an egg roll empire one yard sale at a time
The Digest
Hempfield signed off on $184 million in one night
The Hempfield school board unanimously approved construction contracts totaling $184.3 million on Sept. 8 for the high school renovation. Dillsburg-based Lobar Inc. takes the general contract at $104.4 million, Telford's Myco Mechanical gets $28.9 million for mechanical, and Philips Brothers Electrical of Glenmoore gets $21.4 million. Lancaster's own Jay R. Reynolds Inc. picked up $10.4 million in plumbing. Another $5.8 million goes to eciConstruction for the work south of Kauffman Road in Landisville, including the parking lot, dugouts for the new baseball and softball fields, and lighting around the tennis court.
Total projected cost of the renovation is now $185.3 million. One electrical bid got tabled while the board decides whether a fieldhouse renovation joins the project, and that could come back up in October.

The Eggroll Lady started by knocking on doors
Twenty years ago Nguyet Duong walked up to strangers running yard sales in Lancaster County and asked if she could set up a table and sell egg rolls. Plenty said no. Who eats an egg roll in the morning? Enough said yes. Today she sells thousands in a few hours, the nickname became the business name, and the line at the tent is often the longest one at the sale. The recipe is her family's from Vietnam: ground pork, cabbage, carrots and a special blend of seasonings.
Her younger brother Thong Vo, a part-time pharmacist who didn't know how to roll an egg roll, now runs most of it with his wife Angie. "There's nothing you can't learn if you want to," he said.
