A New Holland cheese maker buys its own warehouse, and Manheim spends $1.98 million on Market Square

The Digest

A cheese sauce maker just became its own landlord

Advanced Food Products LLC paid $5.6 million last month for the warehouse it already uses at 291-301 Commerce Drive near New Holland. The 46,857-square-foot building is used for storage, not cold storage, and it is one of several the company runs in the New Holland area. Advanced Food Products is part of Savencia USA, the company behind Alouette cheese spreads, and both are headquartered about a half mile away on South Custer Road. The seller was a partnership led by Donald Sindall of the New Holland transportation company Sindall Group, which had owned the building since it went up in 2005.

"This was a strategic buy to remain in an existing facility as the prior ownership group who developed the property wanted to sell," said Justin Geisenberger of Sable Commercial Realty, which represented the seller. The company started out as Zausner Foods, an Amish dairy co-op in the 1920s. Its parent reported more than $8 billion in global sales last year.

Manheim is spending $1.98 million on Market Square

Manheim Borough Council awarded a $1.98 million contract on Sept. 8 to JVI Group Inc. of York Springs to rebuild Market Square around pedestrians. The plan adds curb extensions at both ends of the square and at the ends of the center landscape area, plus a new mid-block crosswalk starting near the gazebo. The existing crosswalks get shifted away from the intersections and folded into the new curb extensions so walkers have a refuge at the center island. Traffic signals at both ends will be replaced, U-turns will finally be governed by the light, and the turns onto South Main will be widened so trucks can make them.

Construction is scheduled to run March 29 through Sept. 14, though Borough Manager Joel Mutschler said afterward that the borough may push the start to the end of May. Access to the square stays open throughout, with short partial closures and a posted detour when needed. The borough is holding an open house at its municipal office at 60 West Colebrook St. on Sept. 23 from noon to 3 p.m.
