The Potato Man goes national, and every Halloween event this weekend
The Digest
Lancaster's Potato Man is on "The Drew Barrymore Show" today
Around 2004, Pat Foy bought a 75-pound bag of russet baking potatoes at Costco and started asking the trick-or-treaters on the 200 block of North Pine Street a simple question: candy or potato? Twenty-some Halloweens later, the line up his porch is a city tradition, the Wall Street Journal and NBC have both covered it, and this morning at 9 AM "The Drew Barrymore Show" runs a segment built from the photos and videos Foy sent in. He won't see it air. He's a craftsman, and he'll be at work.
This year the Idaho Potato Commission is sponsoring the spuds, more than 200 pounds picked up from Kegel's Produce last night, and any leftovers go to the Lancaster Hub or the Water Street Mission. Foy, who turned 67 on Wednesday, says he's now handing potatoes to the kids of the kids who got them first. "I'm a prisoner of my own practical joke," he says. He is not asking for parole.
