Breakfast Quest: We Have A Champion
Twenty nominees. One county. A summer our arteries won't forget. You nominated them, we ate them, and the Breakfast Quest is officially over. Here is your podium.
🥇 First place: Savoy Truffle (398 Harrisburg Ave., Suite 250, Lancaster). The order: bacon, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel. The bagel came out perfect and crispy, a genuinely great bagel. And the bacon sealed it: just a little bit of sweetness to it, nice and buttery, a great bite from the first one to the last. That's a champion.
🥈 Second place: Gracie's on West Main (264 W. Main St., Leola). The from-scratch Leola institution came within a bite of the crown.
🥉 Third place: Speckled Hen Coffee (141 E. Main St., Strasburg). Strasburg's cafe rounds out the podium with a locally sourced breakfast sandwich worth the drive.
The full results, the official rules, and all 20 nominees now live at our new Best Breakfast Sandwich in Lancaster page. Thank you to everyone who nominated, argued, and ate along with us. The words Breakfast Quest shall now rest. Until the next quest.
A Penn Manor teacher publishes his own debut novel
Scott Hertzog spent 24 years teaching English at Penn Manor High School, where he ran an independent study that helped eight of his students write and publish their own books, coaching them through outlines, edits, and roughly four chapters a week. Now the retired teacher is finally taking his own advice: his debut novel, The Last King of Äncale, releases August 25 in hardback, paperback, and audiobook. It's an epic fantasy about a sickness plaguing a fictional world and a king forced to reckon with what fear asks of him, and whether it justifies cruelty.
"I like to think that my entire life has been leading up to this moment," Hertzog said. Twenty-four years of grading everyone else's chapters. This one's his.
