A Lititz restaurant just won $30,000

Brazilian Table, the family-owned restaurant and specialty market in downtown Lititz, has won a $30,000 Enhancement Grant through the Backing Small Businesses program run by American Express and Main Street America. Twenty-five businesses in the entire country got one. The shop had already won $10,000 through the same program, finished that first phase, then was invited to compete against applicants nationwide for the larger award. The money goes toward improvements meant to expand operations.

"To be selected by American Express and Main Street America from businesses across the United States is an extraordinary accomplishment," Venture Lititz executive director Sam Thrush said. Brazilian Table opened in August 2022 and sells Brazilian cooking, baked goods, coffee and imported groceries. Four years in, and the country noticed.

The Smithsonian took a piece of a Drumore chicken house

In 2013, workers renovating a chicken house in Drumore found writing on a hidden sheet of drywall. They could not read it, so they called the family who had lived there. Ramona Rivera Navedo knew her father's handwriting immediately. Arcadio Mendez Rivera wrote it sometime between 1952 and 1956, when the family lived in that chicken house on Elmer Weaver's farm. Rivera had come from Puerto Rico to pick tomatoes, and Weaver helped pay to bring the rest of the family over, including 5-year-old Ramona. The Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Latino has now accessioned the drywall into its permanent collection.

Movers came at 8:30 the morning of July 10. Navedo, now 79, put on a nice dress, pinned up her hair and asked them for a printed copy of the pickup confirmation to keep.
