Lancaster Country Club lands five USGA championships, and Grotto Pizza opens as Fetish Brewing closes

The Digest

The 2044 U.S. Women's Open will be played in Lancaster

The USGA announced Tuesday that Lancaster Country Club will host five women's championships between 2028 and 2044. That is the 2028 U.S. Girls' Junior, the 2033 U.S. Senior Women's Open, the 2037 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur, the 2040 U.S. Women's Amateur and, at the end of it, the 2044 U.S. Women's Open. It is nearly every significant USGA event for female golfers, all handed to one club in Lancaster. John Bodenhamer, the USGA's chief championships officer, said LCC helps define what he called the cathedrals of the game.

All 11 members of the Manheim Township girls golf team showed up in uniform and walked to the front of the room to look at the five silver trophies before anyone started talking. "That's the future of golf," Bodenhamer said. Rory Connaughton, who chairs the championship committee at the club, went a step further. "My real hope and my secret hope is that someone from our community will be inspired by what is on offer here and will be that player," he said. "One can dream, anyway."

Grotto Pizza opens on Lititz Pike as Fetish Brewing shuts down

Grotto Pizza opened its first Lancaster County location Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Delaware chain, known for the circular swirl of sauce on its pies, took a 4,900-square-foot corner spot at 1525 Lititz Pike in Manheim Township, in the renovated Shoppes at the Point next to Planet Fitness. It runs as a restaurant and sports bar, dine-in and carryout, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until midnight on Friday and Saturday. The first one opened in Rehoboth Beach in 1960.

The other end of the week belongs to Fetish Brewing, which is shutting down after starting in a Millersville home in 2012. Cartel Brewing & Blending is taking its space at Rock Lititz and opening a taproom called Extended Play, 14 taps and about 60 seats, pending Liquor Control Board approval that head brewer Adam Chamberland hopes lands in early October. "Fetish was one of the pioneers of breweries in Lancaster County," Chamberland said. Co-founder Mike Simpson put it more plainly: "It is the end of the line for Fetish."
