A tug-of-war that takes months to train for and a New York deli on the move

The Digest

Dov-A-Licious Deli is leaving Southern Market

Dov-A-Licious Deli, the New York-style chef's station at Southern Market, is moving out of the food hall and into a place of its own. David "Dov" Davis, who owns the deli, says he will close at Southern Market by the end of October and hopes to open at 1573 Manheim Pike in Granite Run Square in early December. That's the spot Taylor Chip, the cookie and ice cream shop, left empty when it closed in April.

The menu is Reubens and Rachels, corned beef, pastrami and turkey on rye, brisket sandwiches, hot dogs, cheeseburgers and black-and-white cookies. Davis has run the deli at Southern Market for two years (it used to be called Rock N Reuben). If you want your pastrami downtown, you have about three weeks.

Months of practice for a 30-second tug-of-war

The tug-of-war at the New Holland Farmers Fair can be over in about 30 seconds, and the teams train for months to win it. JNR Builders, coached by 25-year-old East Earl farmer Louis Martin, practiced twice a week and took first this year, good for $2,500, a trophy and a Shady Maple gift card. Lanco Concrete Walls was second, with the Weaverland Valley and Intercourse firefighters third and fourth. Every 10-man team has to weigh in at 1,900 pounds or less, and a few heavy teams were pulling off suspenders at the scale.

The contest has run for more than 60 years and has room for 16 teams, but only six entered this year. I think I'm going to put together a team for next year. Who's with me?!
