Bird-in-Hand is a village on the Old Philadelphia Pike (Route 340) in Lancaster County's Amish farmland. It takes its name from an inn William McNabb built in 1734 for travelers on the road between Philadelphia and Lancaster; as the story goes, two travelers settled the question of whether to stop there with a proverb about a bird in the hand, and McNabb liked the saying enough to hang a sign showing a bird resting in a hand. The Bird-in-Hand Village Inn & Suites stands on the site of the original tavern.
