Manheim is a Lancaster County borough laid out in 1762 by Henry William Stiegel and the Philadelphia merchants Charles and Alexander Stedman, and it was incorporated as a borough in 1838. Stiegel's glasshouse at Stiegel and Charlotte streets blew its first glass in 1764 and became known as the American Flint Glass Manufactory. Stiegel gave the Lutherans land for a church at a rent of one red rose a year, and Zion Lutheran Church still pays a rose to a Stiegel descendant on the second Sunday in June.
